Memorial Day 2011

As we celebrate Memorial Day, we pause, to remember our service men and women, who have served their Country and have sacrificed their lives for us. In one way shape or form, all individuals given beyond what most would realize; they have rigorously trained to earn the title and rank for the World's best Military force.  Our returning Veterans and former War Veterans, are wounded, scarred, either mentally physically or both, and disabled or have those close to them who are.  So we pause to, not only give thanks to the Veterans' and their sacrifices, and their family members who have endured months or years, being separated from their loved ones; but also to give thanks for, the reason's why they have sacrificed so much. American Pride, Freedom, Liberty, and Pursuit of Happiness, are among a few reasons' why our service men and women do what they do.

 Freedom, Liberty and Pursuit of Happiness are what keeps foreigners coming to America, and that's what makes America, America. There should be a process though, not only to help get citizenship, but to insure their taxes get paid, and for National security reasons' too.  Those who enter legally and become citizens contribute to our economy, they create a small business and make their own "American Dream".  Is that dream still attainable, for any American though; when there is so much red tape to start a business, and tax's associated with entrepreneurship and our National Debt keeps rising?  Its expensive enough just trying to get your small business off the ground, let alone having to help support Uncle Sam, more and more grant money, with every bright idea to fund some nutty professors theory.  Is the cost of  our economic Freedom really worth, the trade off, for government spending programs?  With the rising debt ceiling, and the wealthy being an easy target to foot the bill, more and more of our Nations wealthy are moving to Republican states or over seas. Who will pay for it then, we will. America pioneered the industrial revolution, and because of taxes, have pushed Corporations overseas, giving China their industrial strength.  By 2020 China will have surpassed the United State's Economy, making them the Global leader of currency, thus giving them the say on what happens on the Global forefront.  They also own the largest amount of our debt,  is it too much to imagine, they'll expect payment in full at some point?!

In retrospect of how far our Country has come, the suffering that our soldiers have gone through, and with what Benjamin Franklin was trying to convey put into context,  do we really understand the true value of what Freedom our military has provided for us, and others around the World?  Showing gratitude towards Veterans is easy and well deserved; but how do we really honor our brave men and women, who have paid the ultimate sacrifice?  We do so by, ensuring Freedom, Liberty and Pursuit of Happiness remains an American virtue; not a traded commodity, by tax redistribution, for votes! Its almost impossible to steer away from mentioning Politics, especially in today's economic climate.  Politics stirs up emotions, anger, and stubborn feelings, even amongst family members. But, Politics effects everyone, or, it would be better to say, tax's effect everyone.  It's sickening to imagine how, the average citizen hears from the mainstream media, promises and goals that actually do the opposite of what has been promised; and the flock have paid attention so long to the lies, the path to the truth for some, seems like a far stretch.  Call it, misguided conventional wisdom, ignorance, or by design, either way you cut it, its just wrong.  How is it that 5013c's like Acorn have received Federal funding yet, one quarter of every homeless person is a Veteran.

Our World is changing and the way business is conducted is moving towards a more global approach, but there's a battle over what curriculum is to be taught Nationally.  It would be naive, to not ponder, what driving forces are behind the construct of the Global movement.  Having the whole thing laid out at once, would be radical; so its been small pieces chipped away, a little at a time to chisel out the sculpture.
 A Global economic standard is not frightening; what is frightening is, what Freedoms or Liberties will be sacrificed to test this social theory?  This, is not fiction, if you want to know whats really going on and why GM's purchase and the forced bailouts, is instrumental in the shift of Global Economics, read this book.

Ronald Reagan has been revered as, probably the best President, by both political parties.  He knew that, its our Freedom and Liberties are what brought people to America, and is what gave our Veterans courage, from George Washington to present, to Fight to the bitter end, for Freedom.  Is it to hard to imagine that those who dislike us, know this also?  America, stand up for your Freedom, Liberty, and rite to Peruse Happiness (Economic Freedom), and thank a Vet for what Freedoms you do have.

OK, done with the doom and gloom and politics; on to a more positive note, that was to merely demonstrate any hurdles a marketer may face and help grasp the larger picture of owning a business in this day and age. Ebay's earnings rise in first quarter, and Amazon is poised for bigger ambitions; while Amazons shares show a downfall, this could be because of recent investments to make way for expansions. Affiliates generate income from both Ebay and Amazon, with several other outlets to market.  Internet marketing has given laid off professionals the opportunity to generate and or replace their former salary.  With the cost of fuel rising, Internet Affiliate Marketing sounds a lot more like a viable way to earn an income.  Social media has become the way of doing business online, staying connected to your clients, promoting your brand, generating link share exposure, even five large brand Companies are betting big on social media.  Wether your company is internet based or brick and mortar with an internet presence increasing your digital footprint, its important not to forget the old fashioned approach to marketing.

Facebook's income from advertising revenue is on track to increase $2 billion this year, doubling from last years marketing earnings. This is an astounding sum of money companies are investing to market their brands, via social media.  The importance of a Facebook fan-page is paramount in connecting with your client base, as well as staying connected for PR and future sales. If your company is more B2B, marketing on LinkedIn could be another avenue to reach your client base. In an issue of Entrepreneur, they have an article about another company similar to LinkedIn, "A New Business Matchmaker Site".   Creating a unique video, and knowing how to market it, can seem like a headache; the important thing to remember is, its entertaining, connects with your customer on a different level, content tags on video are important for seo, and it generates more links for your site. Forbes has an illustration and quote, from Mad Men " Who the hell is in charge, a bunch of accountants trying to make $1 into $1.10? I want to work; I want to build something of my own". 

This seems to be the frustration entrepreneurs face, dealing with their current boss's, ROI or hurdles trying to make their American Dream come true. Marketing online can be a great source for supplemental or replacement income, as mentioned previously above. Here's something you've probably have heard a thousand times, you've got to find your niche.  This seems to be a stopping point for many, trying to decide what to market.  Its simple, in fact, if you don't already have a niche, here is your metaphoric light bulb.  Your niche should be, whatever it is you enjoy doing, for many reasons. 

       Your niche should be something you enjoy doing

• Your familiar with the product(s)
• Its something your passionate about, so you will not have an issue providing current and relevant content; which is important for search results
• Since your familiar with it, you probably already know various ways to market it, or can spread the word easily through any groups you may be affiliated with.
• Since its now a way you generate an income, your hobby or thing you enjoy becomes a tax write off.
• Your hobby/business, now becomes easier for you to brand, and is something you could wear and market on your vehicle with pride.

Keeping your marketing campaign ethical, is key to a successful internet presence; the un-ethical approach, may give you a few quick sales, but will not help for returning clients or word of mouth sharing via social media outlets.  The thing to remember is to keep it simple, use relevant ad's to your traffic, research your content you use, and review the products your advertising yourself before promoting them, "If the price is right, consumers don't mind online ads after all". Google's introduction of introduction of their new algorithm, Panda, has helped level the playing field for those of us who are doing whats right. Some of the bigger companies have taken a hit, since the launch of Panda; but they are more than likely practicing poor SEO in some way, not realize it and only had the web presence before because of name recognition.  Marketing your website, and keeping up with your sites SEO is an ongoing process and can be competitive depending on your market reach.  Some seo software is good for promoting your website; but choose wisely, and know what the product delivers, it could actually hurt your search ranking in the long run. Only as good as your cheapest link

Goggle did what?!  With the launch of Google's new Panda platform, for rating websites', its causing a ruckus for webmasters.  An article from Tech Crunch, suggests Google is not being bias in Panda's algorithm.  The article goes on further to say, You Tube is excelling; while Hubpages has suffered in ranking because of their open format for post's, sharing, etc. .

From an SEO perspective, the way Hubpages is set up, is exactly what attracts low quality linking.  Those who use Google tools to research your key words allready know, how many people are searching for backlinks, and the competition for the bids on variance's of that.  I'm not saying that I wouldn't write an article on their page; but for the lazy or novice, its enticing to throw a quick mumbo jumbo with a link to your site and be done.  It's spammy, cheap, un-usefull to those searching for a real answer and is probably exactly why they were penalized.

This is a good thing, if your working ethically hard to create website traffic; black hat seo just got a black eye, and its up to you now to watch where your posting backlinks.  Theres a great article on Search Engine Watch, covering this topic.   Matt Cutts is one of the engineers who created Panda, he's in a Q&A with Wired.com  and other developer Singhal. Matt mentions that one day an open source algorithm will exist that will not be gamed by the spammers.  For now, their keeping the current algorithm a secret, to keep the spammers from re-growing like a fungus throughout the web. The search engines have been getting some transparency pressure due to the push for net neutrality.  Last I checked, America is still the land of the free; whats stopping them from creating their own search engine and using there concept there?  Then again, that would probobly equal more tax dollars spent wasted on something the private sector is allready managing.  It was all the earmarks and government control or kickbacks that caused the shady lending practices, which led to the finanial collapse.   For now, since the Republicans took control over the House of Representatives, we're safe from fearing the other aspects of net neutrality. Just to think about the possibility of government control, over content, reminds me of the book Ferenheit 451.  

Googles'  getting better all the time, like for instance the feature where its a quick view of page, like a snipett before clicking on page link.  Then theres plus one, this could be an entirely new way of marketing all together; well the obvious and then encentives for action.  Hopefully without autogenerated responses of spam, like Facebook has with the IQ test that has your friends faces on them.  Plus one is a social response to searches, if your friends like the link, then you'll see a plus one on your search results.
